Workshop: Building Basic Marionettes

This is an 8 hours workshop to create wooden string puppets. The participants will learn how to prepare, cut, carve, paint the pieces, make the costumes and the mechanism of a puppet. At the end of the workshop, all participants will have their 20 cm wooden string puppet.

The workshop will take place at PuppenTheatreMuseum, Berlin on 1st and 2nd of June from 14:00 to 18:00. (Karl-Marx-Straße 135, 12043 Berlin)

About Cagri Yilmaz:

Director, puppeteer, designer, playwright and translator. She graduated from the Philosophy Department of Middle East Technical University. In 1999, she attended workshops by Czech puppet artists Miroslav Trejtnar and Marek Becka in Prague and collaborated with Divadlo Continuo Theater. She is the founders of the groups Ahsap Cerceve Puppet Theatre, TRUP, and CagriYilmazPuppets. She had participated at international festivals in Turkey, Pakistan, Israel, Czech Republic, Serbia, Georgia, France, China, Uruguay, Mexico, Guatemala, Tunisia, Colombia, Bulgaria, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2002, she participated in a workshop by butoh dancer Tadashi Endo in Gottingen, exploring the relationship between the movement of the puppet and the dancer’s body. Her interpretation of puppetry is based on this relationship. Since 2006, she has been organizing puppet building, mask design and stop-motion workshops for adults and children. In 2019, she participated in the artist residency program of Lize Puppet Theatre in Yilan County, Taiwan, and from 2019 to 2021, she was a part of the artist residency program of El Albergue del Arte in Mexico City. There, she produced her performance titled „EnSiMisma: Caminos / Paths,“ conducted string puppet making workshops, and designed puppets for other theatre groups. She lived in Argentina from 2015 to 2018, in Mexico from 2018 to 2021, and in Montenegro from 2021 to 2023. She is recently a freelance puppeteer based in Berlin.

Über Cagri Yilmaz:
Regisseurin, Puppenspielerin, Designerin, Dramatikerin. Im Jahr 1999 nahm sie an Workshops der tschechischen Puppenspieler Miroslav Trejtnar und Marek Becka in Prag teil und arbeitete mit dem Divadlo Continuo Theater. Sie ist Gründerin der Gruppen Ahsap Cerceve Puppet Theatre, TRUP und CagriYilmazPuppets. Sie nahm an zahlreichen internationalen Festivals u.a. in der Türkei, Pakistan, Israel, der Tschechischen Republik, Serbien, Frankreich, China, Uruguay, Mexiko, Guatemala, Tunesien, Kolumbien, Bulgarien teil. In einem Workshop des Butoh-Tänzers Tadashi Endo in Göttingen erforschte sie die Beziehung zwischen der Bewegung der Puppe und dem Körper des Tänzers. Ihre Interpretation des Puppenspiels basiert auf dieser Beziehung. 
Seit 2006 veranstaltet sie Puppenbau-, Maskenbau- und Stop-Motion-Workshops für Erwachsene und Kinder. 2019 nahm sie am Artist-Residency-Programm des Lize Puppet Theatre in Yilan County, Taiwan, teil, und von 2019 bis 2021 war sie Teil des Artist-Residency-Programms von El Albergue del Arte in Mexiko-Stadt. Dort produzierte sie ihre Performance mit dem Titel "EnSiMisma: Caminos / Paths", leitete Workshops zur Herstellung von Schnurpuppen und entwarf Puppen für andere Theatergruppen. Von 2015 bis 2018 lebte sie in Argentinien, von 2018 bis 2021 in Mexiko und von 2021 bis 2023 in Montenegro. Seit Kurzem ist sie als freiberufliche Puppenspielerin in Berlin ansässig.
